Aging and quality of life of elderly institutionalized

Summary: Study of the exploratory-descriptive type of quantitative approach was conducted with 69 (sixty-nine) seniors with an average age of 75,40 years ranging from 53 to 90 years, members of four (4) institutions asylum from João Pessoa. Aimed to verify the quality of life of elderly institutionalized these institutions. Data were collected by means of WHOQOL-bref, version in Portuguese, to assess the quality of life. The results were obtained using the descriptive statistics (frequency, mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics. The study showed difference of Qualities of Life of gender, while men are assessed better and have better psychological well-being, due to more positive feelings, take life more and have more power of concentration than women. The activities offered by some institutions surveyed have provided better quality of life, it enables greater motor coordination, stimulate thinking and creativity of older people. Quality of life.Estudo do tipo exploratório-descritivo de abordagem quantitativa, foi realizado junto a 69 (sessenta e nove) idosos com média de idade de 75,40 anos variando de 53 a 90 anos, integrantes de 4 (quatro) Instituições Asilares de João Pessoa. Objetivou verificar a Qualidade de Vida dos idosos institucionalizados dessas instituições. Os dados foram coletados através do instrumento WHOQOL-bref, versão em português, para avaliar a Qualidade de Vida. Os resultados foram obtidos utilizando-se da estatística descritiva (freqüência, média e desvio padrão) e da estatística inferencial. O estudo demonstrou diferença das Qualidades de Vida quanto ao sexo, sendo que os homens se avaliam melhor e possuem melhor bem-estar psicológico, por possuírem mais sentimentos positivos, aproveitarem mais a vida e terem mais poder de concentração que as mulheres. As atividades oferecidas por algumas instituições pesquisadas têm proporcionado melhoria na qualidade de vida, pois possibilitam maior coordenação motora, estimulam o raciocínio e a criatividade dos idosos.
