Experiences of Exclusion in Children in Institutions

Summary: Institutionalization is seen as a developmental risk factor, which, strengths the social stigma and exclusion that institutionalized children already face. The aims of this study was to investigate how the condition of being under care permeates the experiences and relationships of institutionalized children, from their own perspective and that of the professionals of the foster institution. The participants of this study were two girls and two boys, 10 to 13 years-old, attending the same institution, its coordinator and pedagogue. Semi-structured interviews were realized with all participants and some narratives produced by children on proposed themes. Some episodes which emphasize aspects of children’s relationship at school have been selected and analyzed. Children described their interactions at school as conflictive and often violent. Professionals of the foster institution related those facts to their condition of being under care, pointing to attitudes of prejudice and exclusion. Those results emphasize the discourse that positions institutionalized children as unsuccessful people, stimulating the social exclusion that they are victims. It also suggests that the school is being unsuccessful as an inclusive institution.

El objetivo de este estudio fue investigar como la condición de al acobijamiento perpasa las vivencias e sus relaciones establecidas en la escuela, bajo la perspectiva de niños acobijados e de los profesionales del cobijo. Participaron de este estudio dos niñas y dos niños, de 10 a 13 años, acobijados en la misma institución, la coordinadora y la pedagoga de la institución.Entrevistas semi estructuradas fueron utilizadas con cada participante y elaboración de narrativas por los niños. Fragmentos de narrativas que enfatizavam aspectos de las relaciones de los niños en la escuela fueran recortados e analizados. Resultados: los niños describieron las interacciones en la escuela como conflictuosas, frecuentemente violentas. Los profesionales del cobijo relacionaron eso al acobijamiento de los niños, dando origen a una actitud de prejuicio y exclusión. Tales interacciones parecen retomar el discurso del niño acobijado como fracasado, (re)actualizando la exclusión que sufre. Además, indicam el fracaso de la escuela al desempeñar su papel de inclusión.O abrigamento é visto como fator de risco desenvolvimental, fortalecendo o estigma e exclusão social que sofrem crianças abrigadas. Objetivo: investigar como a condição de abrigamento perpassa as vivências e relações destas crianças na escola, a partir das narrativas de crianças e técnicos de um abrigo. Participantes: duas meninas e dois meninos, de 10 a 13 anos, abrigados na mesma instituição, a coordenadora e a pedagoga desta. Metodologia: entrevistas semi-estruturadas com cada participante e elaboração de narrativas pelas crianças. Trechos das narrativas que enfatizavam aspectos das relações das crianças na escola foram recortados e analisados. Resultados: as crianças descreveram as interações escolares como conflituosas, frequentemente violentas. As profissionais do abrigo relacionaram isso ao abrigamento das crianças, apontando uma atitude de preconceito e exclusão. Tais interações parecem retomar o discurso do abrigado como fracassada, (re)atualizando a exclusão que sofrem.
