Resumo: | This current study with a focus on teaching of Portuguese as foreign language in undergraduate courses in the United States, aims to investigate, under the aspects of intercultural perspective, how the teaching of culture can integrate the teaching of language and its contribution to student’s learning and development. Intercultural perspective can be a determinant to the success of communicative interaction, providing cultural negotiating skills which combine curious and conscious behavior about the need to overcome the stereotypes, through linguistic and cultural knowledge in the language. The intercultural perspective contemplates a distinct approach to foreign language teaching promoting social awareness, creativity, open mind to new knowledge and a new way of thinking and seeing the other. In order to develop this research, we chose qualitative and ethnographic research which lasted two semesters, 2013-2014, with direct and intensive observation of Portuguese language classes in the Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies (POBS) at Brown University, USA. The POBS methodology provides students with elements which relate to our study on the integration of language teaching and culture and are consistent with our theoretical framework at the core of intercultural perspective. The Portuguese foreign language classes in that department promote the exchange of information about everyday life in Brazil and other Portuguese speaking countries, develop knowledge of social groups, their products and practices, including marks of national identity, conversational norms and gestures, favoring interpretation, discovery and interaction with the other's culture in real communication situations. In our research we observed reflections on similarities and differences comprehended in the linguistic and cultural development that we consider fundamental to student learning. Our theoretical framework is supported by Byran (1994, 1997,1998, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2008), Hall (2004), Johnson (2009), Kramsch (1993, 1998, 2004, 2006, 2009), Risager (2007), among other authors who defend the foreign language teaching through intercultural perspective. |
