Resumo: | The objective of this article is to propose a comparative analysis of truck and railway transportation in Brazil. In the first part of the paper we describe the development of the two systems and observe the predominance of highway transportation even in areas where rail transportation would seen to be more economic and efficient. In the second part of the paper we discuss the advantages in changing this situation. We compare the costs of setting up and operating the two systems. Findings in this stage of the study, are utilized to show, by means of a case study, the direct benefits that may accure from the construction ofrailway lines in segments with high traffic density. In the last part of the paper we attempt to show that the existing railway network can support a significant increase in the volume of traffic, provided some difficulties in certain critical segments are corrected. |
