“EACH MAN KILLS THE THING HE LOVES”: A QUEER READING OF SILVA PINTO’S “O BERLOQUE VERMELHO”

Resumo: In light of Judith Butler’s insight, including her theories of gender trouble and performativity, this article investigates Brazilian journalist and activist Fernando Gabeira’s trajectory against machismo, homophobia, and gender presumptions. That trajectory spans his formative years (1940s and 1950s), armed resistance to the military dictatorship (1960s), activism during exile, mostly in Sweden (1970-1979), and another 35 years of sociopolitical engagement, after his return to Brazil. Key to this essay’s central inquiry are Gabeira’s thoughts and experiences in his autobiographical trilogy (1979-1981).

Uma leitura queer deste conto permite lançar luz sobre a masculinidade gay, na época em que a categoria de homossexualidade estava a ser forjada, mas ainda não assimilada pela scientia sexualis, a sociedade e a cultura lusas. Contemporâneo das primeiras representações literárias e mediáticas da homossexualidade, o conto antecede a primeira controvérsia nacional inerente ao processo da sua juridificação e psiquiatrização, em que participará o seu autor, com notável repercussão na futura perceção dos homossexuais. Universidade de São Paulo.
