Resumo: This article analyzes the only time the Uruguayan writer Horacio Quiroga (1878-1937) visited Brazil, in 1922. Considering the importance of that year for the Brazilian literature – for it is when the Modern Art Week took place – it reconstructs the context and literary dialogues the writer established in Brazil: his main interlocutor was Monteiro Lobato (1882-1948), the then director of the Revista do Brasil, responsible for introducing Quiroga’s work there. The unpublished letters exchanged between the two writers are recovered and analyzed. In addition to the dialogues and literary beliefs of Quiroga and Lobato, we intend to evaluate the tension between avant-garde and realistic aesthetics which was at stake in the intellectual debate back then.
