OBJECTIVE: To analyze the perception of mothers about the oral health care of their children with microcephaly resulting from Congenital Zika Virus Syndrome (SCVZ).METHODS: Qualitative research was conducted at a State Reference Center for Neurodevelopment located in São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil, from July to September 2019. The study participants were mothers and children with microcephaly resulting from Zika virus infection, aged 3 to 4 years. Twelve semi-structured interviews were conducted with the mothers, and dental examinations were performed on the children to assess their oral health. Thematic content analysis was carried out.RESULTS: All the mothers reported difficulties to perform the oral hygiene of their children. Those related to physical and motor manifestations, the child's behavioral states, the difficult routine of their day, and the need for practical help for care were highlighted.CONCLUSIONS: The importance is reinforced, in the home environment, of the insertion of support networks and of a multiprofessional team, with the integration of the dentist, in order to establish a closer relationship with the routine lived by the family, improving the quality of life of children and their caregivers.
