Impact of immunomodulatory supplementation in adult oncologic patients undergoing gastrointestinal tract surgery: a literature review

OBJECTIVE: To analyze through the literature the impacts of immunomodulatory supplementation on cancer patients undergoing gastrointestinal tract surgery.METHODS: Literature review, using the PUBMED database and Virtual Health Library (VHL), with descriptors: nutritional therapy, immunomodulation, surgery, gastrointestinal neoplasms. The research question was: what do existing publications indicate about the effects of immunomodulatory supplementation in cancer patients elected for gastrointestinal tract surgery? Included were: original articles in English, Portuguese or Spanish, published in the last five years and with human subjects. Excluded were: review articles and meta-analyses. The studies selected according to the defined criteria were read in full and the main results found were extracted.RESULTS: Ten articles were selected. Among the various effects observed, the impact on infectious complications stands out, in which studies indicated a lower incidence in groups of patients undergoing immunomodulatory supplementation, in addition to optimizing nutrient supply, and consequently the nutritional status.CONCLUSIONS: Immunomodulatory supplementation appears to contribute to the reduction of outcomes related to infectious complications.
