Resumo: This study aims to show the power of language in social organization. For this, the analysis of George Orwell's literary work, 1984, is made, in particular, of the creation of a new language in the fictional country of Oceania, which proves to be an important mechanism of population control. For the analysis of this new language, called Newspeak, we seek in the notion of ideological sign, as understood by the Circle of Bakhtin, especially in the work Marxism and philosophy of language (2017), by Volóchinov, the necessary theoretical contribution make explicit how the use of language can contribute to the control and domination of a people. As a result, it is possible to observe that the elimination of the language spoken by the population and the creation of a new language aims at canceling critical thinking, making people mere reproducers of opinions, without any kind of reflection.

Para isso, faz-se a análise da obra literária, 1984, de George Orwell, em especial, da criação de uma nova língua no país fictício da Oceânia, que se revela um importante mecanismo de controle da população. Para a análise dessa nova língua, chamada de Novafala, busca-se na noção de signo ideológico, como compreendida pelo Círculo de Bakhtin, em especial na obra Marxismo e filosofia da linguagem (2017), de Volóchinov, o aporte teórico necessário para explicitar como o uso da língua pode contribuir para o controle e dominação de um povo.
