Wealth as the exchange-value and the Rawls’s difference principle

Resumo: | The paper addresses the concept of wealth in John Rawls’s difference principle. It asks, in particular, about the consequences for the difference principle of Edward Fullbrook’s claim regarding the Boolean structure of exchange-value quantitative orders. One of my conclusions is that, once viewed as a principle governing the distribution of wealth (in the sense of exchange-value, the difference principle requires strict equality (or equality to the nearest possible extent). Such counterintuitive result is avoided when wealth (understood as exchange-value) is replaced by other metrics of advantage, like capabilities or welfare. |

O trabalho trata do conceito de riqueza para fins de aplicação do princípio da diferença de John Rawls. Mais exatamente, trata-se de expor quais são as consequências, no que respeita ao princípio em questão, da tese de Edward Fullbrook sobre a estrutura booleana de ordens de medida do valor de troca. Uma conclusão é que, entendendo-se a riqueza como valor de troca, o que o princípio da diferença requer quanto à sua distribuição é uma igualdade estrita (ou igualdade tanto quanto possível). Esse resultado contraintuitivo é evitado quando a riqueza (como valor de troca) é substituída por outras métricas de vantagem, como a das capacidades e a do bem-estar.
