BETWEEN THE QUERER AND THE DEBER IN THE APOSTOLIC EXHORTATION OF POPE FRANCIS QUERIDA AMAZONIA

The present work describes and analyzes the modal verbs querer and deber in Spanish language in the Apostolic Exhortation of Pope Francis, Querida Amazonia. For this, we take as a basis the typology of the modalities of Hengeveld (2004), seeking to demonstrate, through the engendering of the verbs querer and deber, the establishment of deontic and volitive modalities with regard to the semantic domain and the modal orientation. After analyzing the aforementioned Apostolic Exhortation, we found that there is a greater frequency of using the verb deber, in which the tense used by the speaker can influence the interpretation of an asserted or mitigated deontic force, while the verb querer, when used in different tense, can lead to a greater or lesser probability of materialization of the volitional event. Regarding the modal orientation, we found that, in addition to the orientation for the Participant and the Event, the deontic and volitive modalities can also be oriented to the Episode, in which the verbs querer and deber can function as particles of personal appreciation about the possibility of concretization of an event formed by two or more states-of-affairs based on what the speaker considers obligatory or desirable.
