Regarding the theme ‘Architecture + Music’, this masters' research proposes a reflection about the role of music to architecture, analyzing how the former could be applied by the architect throughout his design process, possibly as a tool for the formal definition of architectural elements. Hence, this work was organized in three parts. First, it discusses some of the possible relations between both disciplines with the goal of identifying the ways with which music could concretely contribute for architecture, as a vehicle for developing forms and elements in a project. It is possible to see, under Rabelo's (2007) point of view, that the relation between these two disciplines is an existing concern since the classical period and that it still continues to be a target of academic studies, such as the ones indicated by Martin (1994) and Kanekar (2015), given that there are many possible observable approximations between architecture and music, among them, the ones which establish mathematical relations, formal, theoretical, metaphorical and even related to the creative process. Secondly, this work presents definitions for the terms ‘composition’ and ‘elements’, with basis on Perrone (1993), Rocha Junior (2014), Unwin (2012) and Copland (1974), so we can then discuss the potential similarities which involve the creative processes in the two areas. Lastly, the union between architecture and music is explored through the analyses of three case studies, in which their respective architects indicate the application of a musical piece in the project, as a concept and/or for the formal definition of the architectural elements. According to the concepts in Martin (1994), Bandur (2001) and Brown (2006), it was possible to define a few ‘compositional modes tied towards music for architecture’ and the posterior classification of the chosen projects.
