UTFPREste livro pretende discutir o conceito de cultura material e problematizar as estratégias de pesquisa em design, procurando valorizar todas as pessoas envolvidas nas várias etapas de projeto, nas materialidades dos artefatos e na construção de significados. Retoma-se aqui, de modo crítico, a ideia tão cara a Daniel Miller de que as coisas que construímos, usamos, descartamos, acabam, de alguma forma, por nos constituir como sujeitos. Evita-se a visão de design colado a posturas de um determinismo tecnológico, optando-se por sublinhar a agência das pessoas, as diferenças e trocas culturais, as resistências e negociações frente às relações de poder e às estruturas hegemônicas. Buscam-se novas interpretações e abordagens para a história do design, destacando as ações coletivas, as práticas cotidianas, as subjetividades imbricadas nas narrativas, as experiências vividas, as memórias de saberes e fazeres, as negociações diárias de processos construtivos, opções de materiais, aspectos simbólicos, disputas de representações de gênero, de raça e etnia, de classe, de gerações. Procura-se compreender como as instâncias do cotidiano são recriadas na memória, normatizadas pelas revistas de decoração, tensionadas e reinventadas por trabalhadores e trabalhadoras. Abordam-se no livro diferentes perspectivas em torno dos acervos, coleções, registro de técnicas; redes sociais e espaços virtuais; o espaço urbano e os entrecruzamentos sociais, culturais, entre mídias e comunicação visual; o design de interiores, os arranjos domésticos e as revistas de decoração como mídias de estilos de vida.This book aims to discuss the concept of material culture and problematize design research strategies, seeking to value all the people involved in the various stages of design, in the materiality of artifacts and in the construction of meanings. Here, in a critical way, we return to the idea so dear to Daniel Miller that the things we build, use, discard, end up, in some way, constituting us as subjects. Avoiding the vision of a design bounded to positions of technological determinism, it chooses to underline people's agency, cultural differences and exchanges, resistance and negotiations in the face of power relations and hegemonic structures. New interpretations and approaches to the history of design are sought, highlighting collective actions, daily practices, subjectivities intertwined in narratives, lived experiences, memories of knowledge and practices, daily negotiations of construction processes, material options, symbolic aspects, disputes over representations of gender, race and ethnicity, class, generations. It seeks to understand how everyday instances are recreated in memory, standardized by decoration magazines, tensioned and reinvented by male and female workers.
