Scientific initiation in the High School: a model for bringing the basic school closer to the university through the scientific method

Resumo: This article describes the educational program “Scientific Initiation in the High School: a Model for bringing the Basic School closer to the University through the Scientific Method”, developed in the city of Porto Alegre since 1999. In this program, the scientific method was introduced into the high school curriculum in order to improve the future achievement of students in the university. Students, accompanied by teachers from the same school, went to university laboratories on Saturdays to learn about and develop original scientific research. The work continued during the week in the high school. The field of Medical Physiology served as the starting point for launching the scientific investigations carried out by the students. The program is based on the fact that the use of the scientific method to solve contextual reallife problems allows for the creation of universal procedures for the solution of many types of problems. This finding may in part be due to the emotional impact that this approach induces in the brain. Based on the results we have obtained during these years, it seems that the program developed an auto-stimulatory cerebral circuit linked to the reward system of the brain which transforms learning into pleasure, thus promoting an education of high-quality.

Se trata de un proyecto desarrollado en colaboración con la Prorrectoría de Investigación de la Universidad Federal de Rio Grande do Sul (PROPESQ/UFRGS), la Prorrectoría de Extensión de la Universidad Federal de Rio Grande do Sul (PROREXT/ UFRGS) y la Secretaría de Educación de Rio Grande do Sul. En este programa, se introdujo el método científico en el currículo de la educación secundaria con el fin de garantizar un mejor desempeño de los alumnos en la universidad en el futuro. Los estudiantes, acompañados por profesores de la misma escuela, van a los laboratorios de la universidad (UFRGS) para aprender y desarrollar proyectos de investigación científica en trabajos originales a los sábados. Los estudios siguen en la escuela durante la semana. Fisiología Médica fue el punto de partida para la investigación científica. El programa se basa en el hecho de que el uso del método científico para resolver problemas contextuales de la vida cotidiana permite el desarrollo de procedimientos neurales universales para resolver muchos otros problemas. Esto se debe, en parte, al impacto emocional que estas rutinas neurales imponen al cerebro humano. De esta forma y basados en los resultados que hemos obtenido a lo largo de los años, creemos que el programa sea capaz de desarrollar un circuito cerebral autoestimulatorio vinculado al sistema de recompensa del cerebro, lo que transforma el aprendizaje en placer, promoviendo una educación de alta calidad.Este artigo descreve o programa educacional  “Iniciação Científica no Ensino Médio: um Modelo de Aproximação da Escola com a Universidade por meio do Método Científico”, que é desenvolvido em Porto Alegre desde 1999.
