Merit or birth? Social origin and performance in access to higher education

Resumo: This paper discusses the association between social origins and academic performance on the probability of access to higher education in Brazil. The data derives from a sample of high school graduates in 2012, followed for five years after completing basic education, from cross-checks with Instituto Nacional de Estudos e Pesquisas Educacionais Anísio Teixeira data. It was observed that, for access to the public sector, performance is the most important predictor, regardless of the socioeconomic level of the applicant, reinforcing a merit dimension in access. The same cannot be said in relation to the private sector which, besides having a strong socioeconomic gap, allows the most privileged social strata to have higher chances of accessing it, even if their school performance is worse.

Los datos derivan de un panel de graduados de secundaria en 2012 seguidos durante cinco años después de la finalización de la educación básica, a partir de cruces de datos de Instituto Nacional de Estudos e Pesquisas Educacionais Anísio Teixeira. Se observó que, para el acceso al sector público, el desempeño es el predictor más importante, independientemente del nivel socioeconómico del candidato, reforzando una dimensión de mérito en el acceso. No se puede decir lo mismo en relación con el sector privado, que, además de presentar una fuerte brecha socioeconómica, permite que los estratos sociales más privilegiados tengan una alta probabilidad de acceder a él, incluso si tienen los peores rendimientos escolares.Cet article débat l’interaction entre l’origine sociale et la performance scolaire dans la probabilité d’accéder à l’enseignement supérieur au Brésil. En partant de la mise en rapport de données de l’Inep, on a obtenu des données concernant un ensemble d’étudiants sortis de l’enseignement moyen en 2012 et que l’on a suivi pendant cinq années après la fin de l’éducation de base. Pour l’accès au secteur public, on note que la performance joue le rôle le plus important, quel que soit le niveau socio-économique du candidat, ce qui renforce le rôle du mérite dans ces cas-là. Il n’en est pas de même pour le secteur privé qui, en plus de présenter un grand hiatus socio-économique, permet aux couches sociales les plus privilégiées de plus grandes chances d’y arriver, même si elles ont des performances scolaires plus mauvaises.Este trabalho discute a interação entre origem social e desempenho escolar nas probabilidades de acesso ao ensino superior no Brasil. Os dados derivam de um painel de egressos do ensino médio em 2012 acompanhados por cinco anos após a conclusão da educação básica, com base em cruzamentos de dados do Instituto Nacional de Estudos e Pesquisas Educacionais Anísio Teixeira. Observou-se que, para o acesso ao setor público, o desempenho é o preditor mais importante, independentemente do nível socioeconômico do candidato, reforçando uma dimensão de mérito no acesso.
