Ethics and research: autonomy and heteronomy in scientific practice

Summary: This essay discusses, from the philosophical perspective, ethical dilemmas posed to researchers in developing their scientific practice in the current social scenario, which is marked by a universalized ethical relativism and at the same time is challenged by the demands of ethical legitimacy of the act. On the one hand, researchers face pressure from the world market, a visceral context in which human life takes place today; on the other hand, they are challenged by equally strong demands of a moral nature. The present paper discusses the place of legal normativity in the interface with ethical legitimacy, as well as the relationship of heteronomic determination linked to the logic of hegemonic pragmatism in contemporary social life, with the moral sensibility imposed on scientists. Therefore, it attempts to support the discussions and initiatives that are currently being conducted by the national scientific community with a view to the preparation and formalization of ethical criteria for research practice, particularly in the sphere of the humanities.

Por una parte, los investigadores enfrentan presiones del mundo del mercado, contexto uterino en el que se da la vida humana en la actualidad; por otra, son interpelados por demandas igualmente fuertes de naturaleza moral. El presente texto discute, entonces, el lugar de la normatividad legal en la interfaz con la legitimidad ética, así como la relación de las determinaciones heteronómicas, vinculadas a la lógica pragmática hegemónica en la vida social contemporánea, con la sensibilidad moral que se impone al científico. Busca, de este modo, subsidiar las discusiones e iniciativas que son conducidas en el momento por la comunidad científica nacional con miras a la elaboración y formalización de criterios éticos para la práctica investigativa, particularmente en la esfera de las Ciencias Humanas. O ensaio debate, sob a perspectiva filosófica, dilemas éticos que se põem para os pesquisadores no desenvolvimento de sua prática científica no atual cenário social, que, ao mesmo tempo que é marcado por um relativismo ético universalizado, se vê interpelado pelas exigências de legitimação ética do agir. De um lado, os pesquisadores enfrentam pressões do mundo do mercado, contexto uterino em que se dá a vida humana na atualidade; de outro, são interpelados por demandas igualmente fortes de natureza moral. O presente texto discute, então, o lugar da normatividade legal na interface com a legitimidade ética, bem como a relação das determinações heteronômicas, vinculadas à lógica pragmática hegemônica na vida social contemporânea, com a sensibilidade moral que se impõe ao cientista.
