Resumo: Objective: The present study aimed to investigate, through a literature review, the relationship between the effects of radiotherapy on the salivary flow of irradiated patients and the incidence of caries disease. Methodology: It consists of a literature review, through the search in PUBMED, SciELO, Google Scholar and Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS) databases from 2015 to 2022. Results: Radiotherapy can affect the salivary glands, resulting in xerostomia which, through the decrease in salivary flow, generates greater susceptibility in the development of caries disease. In addition, the change in tooth structure induced by radiation, also makes the tooth more susceptible to cariogenicity. Conclusion: Radiotherapy affects the function of the salivary glands, inducing xerostomia, changes in salivary flow, changes in pH and oral microbiota. The union of these factors, consequently, causes the appearance of radiation caries.
