The university issue in Brazil and the challenge of social inclusion

Higher education in Brazil has as a challenge the social inclusion of students from underprivileged social strata. The insertion of these students in the university environment needs to consider the autonomy of higher education, as well as the deficient schooling of these social strata. In addition, there is still a lack of financial resources on the part of these students which needs to be circumvented so that social inclusion can be established. One cannot overlook Distance Learning, which favored a greater number of enrollments of poor students, since the subjects offered in this modality are less expensive than the face-to-face subjects. Public affirmative action policies have definitely contributed to social inclusion in Brazilian higher education.
