Resumo: David Moretzsohn Campista (1863-1911) was one of the members of the young parliamentary and ministerial force designed by Afonso Pena (1847-1909), known as kindergarten, at a time in the Brazilian Republic marked by personalism, fraud and political violence. Oriented by the principles of the New Political History, this article intends to discuss the trajectory of this Minas Gerais politician who held relevant positions at state level (constituent and state deputy, immigration commissioner and secretary of state twice), at federal level (federal deputy and government minister), was almost a candidate for the presidential succession of Afonso Pena and ended up relegated to ostracism. Through Campista's biography, writings and speeches, it is possible to glimpse the experience of political power in the early days of the Republic, in particular, the role played by one of the representatives of a humanist generation, knowledgeable of European political philosophy and national problems. For the construction of the article, primary and secondary sources were consulted, including parliamentary annals, government reports, a book written by Campista in Italy, newspapers of the time, biographical and bibliographic references, among others.
