Resumo: This thesis analyses the motivations and expectations of the families which selected Colégio Coração de Jesus, located in Florianópolis, capital of the state of Santa Catarina, to provide formal education to their disabled children, between 1970 and 1990, and describes the organization, functioning and obtained results from the Special Classes implemented in this institution to serve the local population. Colégio Coração de Jesus was founded in 1898 and solidified its basis along last century, being known as a high standard institution, providing quality education to the state elite. We tried to understand the reasons why the school decided to open space for the disabled, and what type of education was offered during these 20 years of service. About the family, we tried to understand the criteria and motivations, correlating to the future and educational expectations of the disabled child. Based on the idea that the concept of disability is a social fabrication, this research is supported by the studies carried out by Bueno (1993, 1997, 2001). The issues about social class, educational level, family heredity and social destination are based on the Bourdiesian theory and other Brazilian studies, as the ones from Nogueira, Almeida and Ortiz. The followed procedures were the analyses of documents and interviews. 15 interviews with the families of 7 students who were in these Special Classes, three teachers and one former student were conducted. The interviews were wholly transcripted and the data divided in three thematic categories: the family, the Colégio Coração de Jesus and the social destination. The main results show: a) as to the choice for Colégio Coração de Jesus, we concluded that, since the birth of this child, these families are struggling, both internally and externally, to find service which normalizes the disability matter, and they found this opening in CCJ, also, the motivations and expectations of these families about this choice were based more on the search for a traditional school, which could offer the opportunity to cohabit with people from the same social origins than on the expectation related to the possibilities for their children s education; and b) as to the way Colégo Coração de Jesus organized itself to work with them, we concluded that there was a lack of synchronism between the aims of the families and the teachers planning. The families were seeking for a more in-depth educational service at CCJ, however, the school, not believing in the content learning potential of these students, was attempting to implement, even without proper structure, daily routine activities, which were very common by that time in special schools. The disclosure of the Special Classes with the integration project met the families goals, through the mentioning of the value given to the diploma and the graduation ceremony reported by the families, even though the incredulity about the validity of the evaluations, and mainly, being aware of the symbolic value of this diploma. It is possible to conclude that these families fought against the exclusion of their children in the places which are to the non-disabled; they made way for their children to pursue their lives within the pattern they longed for. First the school life came. Making use of the social means, the Special Classes were created at Colégio Coração de Jesus, and in so doing, they could reach educational success, also, most of the students were able to receive their elementary diploma. Then, the professional career. A cooperative society was started (Special Cooperative of Parents, Friends and the Disabled) to assure the job and, consequently, define the social destiny of these children.

First the school life came. Making use of the social means, the Special Classes were created at Colégio Coração de Jesus, and in so doing, they could reach educational success, also, most of the students were able to receive their elementary diploma. A cooperative society was started (Special Cooperative of Parents, Friends and the Disabled) to assure the job and, consequently, define the social destiny of these children.
