Resumo: In this paper we analyze some syntactic and semantic properties of free relatives and whsubordinate interrogatives, both proper and improper, developing Brito (1991), Brito & Duarte(2003), Móia (1996), Veloso (2013), Matos & Brito (2013), Mioto& Lobo (2016), correlatingthem with the way Óscar Lopes described these constructions; we highlight structural andsemantic ambiguity of some of wh constructions. We argue for the existence of several types offree relatives, mainly ones with definite, universal and indefinite meaning.
