My title refers to the Portuguese translation of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” (1845) published by Fernando Pessoa in 1924. This article describes the sound textures and semantic webs of "O Corvo" as a powerful recreation of the sound-sense correlations in the original text. This translation is both an instance of the combinatorial principles described by Poe in “The Philosophy of Composition” (1846), and an example of the determination of meaning through rhythm that sums up Pessoa’s poetics. In the light of Fernando Pessoa’s definition of poetry translation, "O Corvo" is analysed as translinguistic parody and authorial plagiarism. |
