Negotiation of intercultural issues in telecollaborative spaces

Resumo: The use of the Internet in the area of teaching and learning languages is the object of research. However, there have been no studies on the review of investigations that focus on the negotiation of intercultural issues in telecollaborative contexts. Such a finding as well as the relevance of literature reviews helped us to outline the objective of this study, that is, to understand how the negotiation of intercultural issues occured in telecolaborative spaces in four studies: Understanding the ‘Other Side’: Intercultural Learning in a Spanish-English E-mail Exchange (O’DOWD, 2003); The use of videoconferencing and e-mail as mediators of intercultural student ethnography (O’DOWD, 2006); Using e-learning to develop intercultural awareness in ELT: a critical evaluation in a Thai higher education setting (BAKER, 2012a) and, finally; Exploring ‘new’ interculturality online (DERVIN, 2014). Our analysis showed that the contact between different cultures does not guarantee intercultural understanding and that the concept of culture is still based on a national framework.

Sin embargo, no existen estudios que se ocupan de la revisión de trabajos enfocados en la negociación de asuntos interculturales en contextos telecolaborativos. Eso, sumado a la relevancia de revisiones de literatura, nos ayudó a definir el objetivo de ese estudio, es decir, comprender el modo por el cual ocurrió la negociación de asuntos interculturales en espacios telecolaborativos en cuatro trabajos: Understanding the ‘Other Side’: Intercultural Learning in a Spanish-English E-mail Exchange (O’DOWD, 2003); The use ofvideoconferencing and e-mail as mediators of intercultural student ethnography (O’DOWD, 2006); Using e-learning to develop intercultural awareness in ELT: a critical evaluation in a Thai higher education setting (BAKER, 2012a) y, finalmente; Exploring ‘new’ interculturality online (DERVIN, 2014). El análisis demostró que el contacto entre culturas no garantiza el entendimiento intercultural y que el concepto de cultura permanece asociado con una concepción esencialmente nacional.O uso da Internet na área do ensino e aprendizagem de línguas destaca-se como objeto de estudos. No entanto, não há revisão de trabalhos sobre a negociação de significados em contextos telecolaborativos, possibilitados pelo uso da Internet. Essa constatação, assim como a relevância de revisões de literatura, nos ajudou a delinear o objetivo desse estudo, qual seja, compreender a relação entre o uso da telecolaboração e a negociação de assuntos interculturais por quatro trabalhos: Understanding the ‘Other Side’: Intercultural Learning in a Spanish-English E-mail Exchange (O’DOWD, 2003); The use of vídeo conferencing and e-mail as mediators of intercultural student ethnography (O’DOWD, 2006); Using e-learning to develop intercultural awareness in ELT: a critical evaluation in a Thai higher education setting (BAKER, 2012a); e  Exploring ‘new’ interculturality online (DERVIN, 2014).
