The aim of this article is to investigate the origin of the analogy of games in Wittgenstein’s thought and its influence on the development of his method of grammatical investigation, particularly in his work Philosophical investigations (2022). We consider the notions of rules, following rules, and grammar as essential aspects of the normative dimension of human language, and the analogy with games - especially in the form of language games - is a powerful pedagogical tool aimed at clarifying the functioning of our language. Initially, we will explore how Wittgenstein’s philosophy incorporates the image of games and utilizes it as a tool to elucidate philosophical problems and understand the nature of language and meaning. In a second phase, we will seek to comprehend whether following a rule is necessarily a social practice. Finally, we will address the role that language games play within Wittgenstein’s method. By examining these three points, we intend to demonstrate the significance of the analogy of games in elucidating the functioning of our language, particularly in relation to its normative character.
