This doctoral research aims to understand the role of the Public Archive of the State of Espírito Santo (APEES) in promoting the past, between 1988 and 2020, through the analysis of archival public policies and, in particular, the practices related to the functions of acquisition and description of private collections, specifically personal archives. To this end, the following specific objectives are: I) Understand the role of the Public Archive in the memorial processes of the State of Espírito Santo, seeking to reflect on its political aspects; II) Establish the relationship between private collections and the writing of history as contributions to the construction of collective and individual identities and memories;III) Analyze the existence (or not) of policies that guide the performance of the functions of acquisition and description of personal files in the Public Archive of Espírito Santo (APEES) between 1988 and 2020. In order to seek answers to the questions presented, the research used documentary and bibliographic sources, as well as information available in newspapers and on the institutional website of the APEES. We conclude that the acquisition process represents a very significant operation and is related to the performance of the archives as a place of memory. In the same way, the research instruments, the result of the description process, make it possible to consult the documents belonging to the institution's collection. We can characterize the trajectory of the Public Archive of the State of Espírito Santo as marked by different political and technical dynamics, which leads to ruptures and continuities in document management policies and in the promotion of the past. From the 1990s on, there has been a transformation in its practices, moving in a more institutionalized direction towards its consolidation as a public space for access to documentation, production and dissemination of knowledge about the history of Espírito Santo.
