Geographical Indication for Fine Grapes from Marialva

The objective of this article is to explain the process of qualification of the Marialva Geographical Indication (GI) for the production of fine table grapes. For that, a qualitative and exploratory research was conducted, based on documentary and field research, using an unstructured interview. The results show that the municipality of Marialva obtained the registration of GI from an initiative of the Sebrae Paraná Regional Noroeste. It counted on the performance of several other actors, such as farmers, universities and other entities. This is a complex process, since the fact that the grape is produced in the region does not guarantee the use of the distinctive label, which must be certified by professionals, certifying that it is peculiar to production. In addition, the need for communication strategies to be used by the municipalities that have the recognition of the GI is emphasized, providing higher income for the producer and positively moving the local economy.
