O que significa ser bilíngue para surdos usuários de Língua Brasileira de Sinais e Língua Portuguesa: uma investigação sobre bilinguismo bimodal e ideologias linguísticas

The aim is to reflect on the use of languages of different modalities and to discuss the perceptions of deaf people regarding their own status as bimodal bilinguals. A holistic view was adopted (GROSJEAN, 2008a) for bilingualism, which understands the bilingual as an integrated whole that cannot be separated, and not as the sum of two monolinguals. The idea defended was that bilinguals, whether unimodal or bimodal, do not necessarily have the same levels of proficiency in each of the skills and are situated on a linguistic continuum (MOZZILLO DE MOURA, 1997; MACNAMARA, 1967). The assumptions about linguistic ideologies by Del Valle (2007) were adopted, who define them as a system of ideas that articulates notions related to language and cultural, social and political formations, and by Woolard (2007), whose understanding of ideologies includes the aspects and the exercise of power. The results indicate that the informants are aware that Libras is their first language (BAGGA-GUPTA, 2000), even if they acquired it late (SILVA, 2015). However, it was found that many do not consider themselves bilingual. Even if they have experienced situations in which prejudices, communication difficulties or linguistic isolation occurred, it was noticed that, in general terms, the informants assess a positive value to bimodal bilingualism.
