Sociolinguistic profile of deaf people in São Carlos: the bimodal bilingualism Libras/Portuguese Language

Resumo: This research aims to present a sociolinguistic characterization of the deaf community in the city of São Carlos. For the analysis of 30 surveys, applied to the deaf in the city located in the Central region of the State of São Paulo, we used the theoretical assumptions of Sociolinguistics (LABOV, 1966, 2008) and Sociolinguistics of sign languages (LUCAS, 2004). The results point to a context of bimodal bilingualism, with the Portuguese language playing an important role in communication and having a high status in the community, despite being a language of employment only in the written modality.

Para análisis de 30 encuestas, aplicadas a los sordos en el municipio de la Región Central del Estado de São Paulo, se utilizaron los supuestos teóricos de Sociolingüística (LABOV, 1966, 2008) y Sociolingüística de la lengua de signos (LUCAS, 2004). Los resultados apuntan a un contexto de bilingüismo bimodal, con la lengua portuguesa jugando un papel importante en la comunicación y teniendo un alto estatus en la comunidad, a pesar de ser una lengua de trabajo solo en la modalidad escrita.A presente pesquisa objetiva apresentar uma caraterização sociolinguística da comunidade surda da cidade de São Carlos. Para a análise de 30 inquéritos, aplicados aos surdos do município localizado na região Central do Estado de São Paulo, empregamos os pressupostos teóricos da Sociolinguística (LABOV, 1966, 2008) e da Sociolinguística das línguas de sinais (LUCAS, 2004).
