Resumo: The history of the southern region of Pará is marked by the colonization of the Amazon border, with several conflicts involving land, people, culture, language. Different population groups characterize this space, historically connected to the migratory process that took place in this region. Accepting the idea of recognizing the linguistic and cultural diversity generated by this interaction, the present work aims to conduct a sociolinguistic study on the occurrence of the retroflex variant [ɻ] in the city of Redenção, southern region of Pará. Historically, the studies involving the retroflex variant [ɻ] are linked to the proposal of understanding the “caipira” dialect of the state of São Paulo (AMARAL, 1920), expanding to the southeastern, southern and central- western regions of Brazil, following the route of the “bandeirantes paulistas” throughout the country. Its realization is considered typical of rural speech, such as the “caipira paulista” or the “roceiro goiano” (REZENDE, 2005; 2008). Despite this, studies indicate the occurrence of this variant in northern Brazil (BRANDÃO, 2007), a phenomenon little approached in existing sociolinguistic research. This work is consistent with the relation of the occurrence of the retroflex variant [ɻ] linked to the “bandeirante” expansion, which, in the context of southern Pará, is marked by the arrival of the "new bandeirantes" (from São Paulo, Goiás, Minas Gerais) in this region in the 1960s. This historical fact is highlighted as the colonizing process of this space, which presents as a result the domination of space and its resources and the subordination of black and indigenous bodies of the Amazon by the white body of the Center-South. The methodological proposal used is based on hegemonically constituted theories, being a qualitative field research based on Labov's Sociolinguistics (2008) and on the construction of Social Networks of Milroy and Llamas (2013). Recorded conversations were held with 12 citizens born in the city of Redenção, (henceforth co- participants), whose accounts were transcribed, becoming the empirical materiality of the research. After the quantitative treatment of the materials, the results indicate that of the 12 participants in the study, 3 carried out the retroflex variant [ɻ] in their speech; the glottal fricative [h] and phonetic zero [ᴓ] compete in the final syllable context of <R>, predominantly among the participants of the urban nucleus of the city of Redenção, and among some participants, the retroflex variant also becomes a competitor for the realization of <R> in the same context. It is considered that, for the co-participants, the retroflex variant is evaluated as a sociolinguistic stereotype (LABOV, 2008) related to the rural context within the city. However, its implementation is also strongly associated with the agricultural context present in the region, with the central southern white body taken as an index of development in rural space, adding a sociolinguistic prestige on the social evaluation of this variant in the urban context of the city of Redenção.

Submitted by Franciele Moreira (francielemoreyra@gmail.com) on 2020-03-26T15:03:39Z No. of bitstreams: 2 Dissertação - Manoella Gonçalves Bazzo - 2020.pdf: 5487345 bytes, checksum: 48520e317284fcc52e96d2963e6fecf4 (MD5) license_rdf: 0 bytes, checksum: d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e (MD5)Approved for entry into archive by Luciana Ferreira (lucgeral@gmail.com) on 2020-03-26T15:21:41Z (GMT) No. of bitstreams: 2 Dissertação - Manoella Gonçalves Bazzo - 2020.pdf: 5487345 bytes, checksum: 48520e317284fcc52e96d2963e6fecf4 (MD5) license_rdf: 0 bytes, checksum: d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2020-03-26T15:21:41Z (GMT). description The history of the southern region of Pará is marked by the colonization of the Amazon border, with several conflicts involving land, people, culture, language.
