RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN SUPERMARKETS SUPPLY CHAINS

Resumo: Lately, there has been an increase on foreign direct investment and mergers which results on more concentration of retailing and the formation of global supply chains. As a consequence, co-operative arrangements between producers and retailers have been considered as an interesting alternative to spot market transactions. This study discusses how supermarkets strategies are transferring standards for the different agents involved in beef production and processing. The literature reviews relationships within the supply chains, the transaction costs economics framework and supermarkets strategies. The empirical approach employed in the study is based on qualitative methods focusing on four case studies of large and medium sized supermarket chains located in Brazil. The results have great policy and managerial implications for the retail and food sector and research on supply chain in Latin America. The results also have important implications for managers of the beef chains in particular and other chains in general. From a managerial perspective, the results suggest that investments in management capacity to new forms of organization and brandings have to be considered. Emerging private standards are demanding changes to a more integrated supply chain in order to enhance confidence in the beef production and processing. Supermarkets are the chain leaders in this change.

Supermarkets are the chain leaders in this change.Últimamente, ha sido registrado un aumento en las inversiones directas en el exterior y en fusiones, lo que se refleja en una mayor concentración del comercio minorista y en la formación de cadenas de provisiones globales. En consecuencia, acuerdos cooperativos entre productores y comerciantes minoristas han sido vistos como una alternativa interesante a las transacciones del mercado al contado. Este estudio discute cómo las estrategias de los supermercados transfieren patrones para los diferentes agentes envueltos en la producción y procesamiento de la carne. La literatura revisa los relacionamientos dentro de las cadenas de provisión, la economía de costos de transacciones y las estrategias de los supermercados. El abordaje empírico utilizado en este estudio se fundamenta en métodos cualitativos, con enfoque en cuatro estudios de caso de pequeñas y medianas cadenas de supermercados en Brasil. Los resultados presentan grandes implicaciones políticas y gerenciales para el sector de comercio minorista y alimenticio, y para la investigación sobre cadenas de provisión en América Latina. También hay implicaciones importantes para los administradores de las cadenas de carne de ganado, en particular, y otras cadenas, en general. Desde una perspectiva gerencial, los resultados sugieren que inversiones en la capacidad de gerenciamiento, con vistas a las nuevas formas de organización y brandings, deben ser considerados. Patrones privados emergente están exigiendo el cambio para una cadena de provisión más integrada, con el propósito de aumentar la confianza en la producción y procesamiento de carne de ganado. Los supermercados son líderes de la cadena en ese cambio.Ultimamente, tem sido registrado um aumento nos investimentos diretos no exterior e em fusões, o que se reflete em uma maior concentração de varejo e na formação de cadeias de suprimento globais. Este estudo discute como as estratégias dos supermercados transferem padrões para os diferentes agentes envolvidos na produção e processamento de carne. A literatura revisa os relacionamentos dentro das cadeias de suprimento, a economia dos custos de transação e as estratégias dos supermercados. A abordagem empírica utilizada neste estudo baseia-se em métodos qualitativos, com foco em quatro estudos de caso de pequenas e médias cadeias de supermercados no Brasil. Os resultados apresentam grandes implicações políticas e gerenciais para o setor varejista e alimentício e para a pesquisa sobre cadeias de suprimento na América Latina. Também há implicações importantes para os administradores das cadeias de carne bovina em particular e outras cadeias em geral. De uma perspectiva gerencial, os resultados sugerem que investimentos na capacidade de gerenciamento visando novas formas de organização e brandings precisam ser considerados. Padrões privados emergentes estão exigindo a mudança para uma cadeia de suprimento mais integrada, com o propósito de aumentar a confiança na produção e processamento de carne bovina.
