Efeitos da cobertura morta com Flemingea no cultivo do morangueiro manejado organicamente sob ambiente protegido

Organic farming differs from other cropping systems by employing management practices in accordance to environmental preservation and health of consumers. A growing group of consumers who values a healthy diet and combine it with environmental protection is responsible for an increasingly demand for organic foods. Organic fruits and vegetables are frequently required, however, not all are easily found on the market due to various production difficulties and seasonality. Organic strawberries are difficult to grow, still requiring improvements in farming techniques. One of these techniques, traditionally used on this crop, is plastic soil cover, which is expensive, slowly degradable and oil dependent. This study was designed to evaluate the influence of four layers of mulch obtained from cuttings of the legume Flemingia macrophylla on crop productivity, and physical and chemical characteristics of strawberry pulp. An experiment was carried out in the municipality of Serop?dica, the Baixada Fluminense region of Rio de Janeiro, under greenhouse, in beds made directly on the ground, with 20 cm high. The treatments consisted of two strawberry cultivars (Albion and San Andreas) associated with four widths of dried F. macrophylla mulches (0.0 cm, 2.5 cm, 5.0 cm, and 7.5 cm). The experimental design was a randomized blocks with treatments arranged in a factorial with five replications. The cultivars behaved differently: San Andreas yielded greater number and weight of commercial and noncommercial fruits. Albion produced the largest number of fruits damaged by insects. The layers of mulch used, decreased strawberry yields. Plants in control plots produced larger number of fruits, decreasing with increasing thickness of the mulch. There was no difference of cultivars or flemingea treatments on fruit quality. The two cultivars behaved equivalently on the harvest sequence, so none behaved as a late or early cultivar. No explanation was found to the negative effects of flemingea mulching, which needs to be elucidated in future experiments.
