Barriers and coping of women in predominantly male careers

Resumo: Women in predominantly male careers (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) have historically been underrepresented, from formation to entering the job market. Women in such careers are subjected to exclusion mechanisms that make it difficult to face the encountered barriers. The present paper aimed to analyze, through a qualitative study with 15 women, how female students and professionals in predominantly male careers perceive barriers and use coping strategies. The results demonstrate that barriers are perceived more predominantly than coping strategies, especially harassment, gender discrimination and excessive demands. We conclude that interventive arrangements are needed for offering more permanence strategies for women in careers in which they remain minority.

En estas carreras, las mujeres están sujetas a mecanismos de exclusión que dificultan el enfrentamiento de las barreras encontradas. Este artículo tuvo como objetivo analizar, a través de un estudio cualitativo con 15 mujeres, las barreras y estrategias de afrontamiento utilizadas por estudiantes y profesionales en carreras predominantemente masculinas. Los resultados demuestran que las barreras se perciben más que las estrategias, especialmente las relacionadas con el acoso, la discriminación de género y las acusaciones excesivas. Se concluye que son necesarias acciones de intervención que ofrezcan estrategias de permanencia a las mujeres en carreras que siguen siendo minoría.As mulheres permanecem historicamente sub-representadas em carreiras predominantemente masculinas (Ciências, Tecnologia, Engenharias e Matemática), desde a formação até a inserção no mercado de trabalho. Nestas carreiras, elas são submetidas a mecanismos de exclusão que dificultam o enfrentamento das barreiras encontradas. O presente artigo teve como objetivo analisar, por meio de um estudo qualitativo com 15 mulheres, as barreiras e as estratégias de enfrentamento utilizadas por estudantes e profissionais femininas em carreiras predominantemente masculinas. Os resultados demonstram que as barreiras são mais percebidas do que as estratégias, em especial as relativas a assédio, discriminação de gênero e cobranças excessivas.
