The quota’s law in high education: assessing the mismatch hypothesis in the case of Federal University of Sergipe

Resumo: In this work we search to test the hypothesis, present in the literature on affirmative policies in high education that there is a mismatch between the student that enters through quotas and an academic environment with high demand on performance. Data related to incoming students between 2013 and 2017 at Federal University of Sergipe were used, with information on academic achievement until May 2018, student and curse profile. Statistic and econometric methods were employed in the analysis and the estimations points that, in general, the quotas students overcome the wide competition ones. However, this advantage prevails only in the lower quantiles of the score distribution until the median. From the third quartile on, there is no systematic evidence of differences between the groups.   Key-words: affirmative policies; quotas; high education; performance differentials.

Foram utilizados dados referentes aos ingressantes entre 2013 e 2017 da Universidade Federal de Sergipe com informações sobre desempenho acadêmico até maio de 2018, perfil do aluno e curso. Métodos estatísticos e econométricos foram empregados nas análises e as estimativas apontam que, em geral, os cotistas se saem melhor do que ampla concorrência. Porém, esta vantagem prevalece apenas no quantil mais baixos da distribuição de notas até a mediana.
