Resumo: Based on gender studies and sociological theory, we conducted a comparative analysis and study of the short story “A Telephone Call” by Dorothy Parker (2020) and its homonymous audiovisual transposition (REDEMOINHO, 2021). Beyond the divergences and similarities between the two, we explored how historically constructed and reproduced gender roles affect and oppress the protagonist to the point of leading her to an obsessive emotional state while she waits for a phone call, observed in her interior monologue that tends towards the dramatic. The theoretical support was based on studies on gender devices (ZANELLO, 2018), the concept of gender technology (LAURETIS, 2019) and its examples (DEL PRIORE, 2005) as well as gendered processes of social interaction, habitus, and scripts (DIMEN, 1988; BOURDIEU, 1983; ZANELLO, 2018). We concluded the presence of the simultaneity of the theme of the internal conflict of what she wants as an ontological subject and what she should perform as a woman, that is, being adrift, waiting and passive, regardless of her will and desire.
