Education and sustainability in the rural environment: a case study on the perception of family farmers

Resumo: The objective of the present case study was to verify the perception and practices of small family farmers regarding the aspects of conservation of springs in their rural property, as well as to identify the rural training activities offered in their territorial space. The work was carried out in 99 rural properties of family farmers in the Ponte Alta Rural Nucleus, Administrative Region of Gama, in the City of Brasília, Federal District - Brazil. This research is methodologically characterized as quantitative, exploratory and descriptive. Data collection was carried out through the application of a semi-structured questionnaire, containing questions that referred to the perception and behavior of the interviewed farmers on the theme under analysis and characterization of the social profile. Based on the results, it is clear that less than 50% of the interviewees carry out spring recovery and conservation practices. Among the farmers who tried to recover their springs, 27.27% just surrounded the spring, another 27.27% just reforested and 27.27% recovered through planting. The lack of knowledge about the importance of recovering springs in rural properties is a reality. Thus, environmental education becomes an important tool for rural producers to become aware of environmental aggravation and, at the same time, to learn about the methods for appropriate preservation and conservation. Production of native seedlings, Fruit and Organic Agriculture were registered as the main training desires pointed out by family farmers, which may lead to the perception of a certain degree of environmental awareness among small farmers in the region where the study was carried out.

El trabajo se llevó a cabo en 99 propiedades rurales de agricultores familiares en el núcleo rural Ponte Alta, Región Administrativa de Gama, en la ciudad de Brasilia, Distrito Federal - Brasil. Esta investigación se caracteriza metodológicamente como cuantitativa, exploratoria y descriptiva. La recolección de datos se llevó a cabo mediante la aplicación de un cuestionario semiestructurado, que contenía preguntas que se referían a la percepción y el comportamiento de los agricultores entrevistados sobre el tema bajo análisis y caracterización del perfil social. Con base en los resultados, está claro que menos del 50% de los entrevistados llevan a cabo prácticas de recuperación y conservación en primavera. Entre los agricultores que intentaron recuperar sus manantiales, el 27.27% solo rodeó la primavera, otro 27.27% simplemente reforestó y el 27.27% se recuperó mediante la siembra. La falta de conocimiento sobre la importancia de recuperar manantiales en propiedades rurales es una realidad. Por lo tanto, la educación ambiental se convierte en una herramienta importante para que los productores rurales tomen conciencia del agravamiento ambiental y, al mismo tiempo, aprendan sobre los métodos para la preservación y conservación apropiadas. La producción de plántulas nativas, frutas y agricultura orgánica se registraron como los principales deseos de capacitación señalados por los agricultores familiares, lo que puede conducir a la percepción de un cierto grado de conciencia ambiental entre los pequeños agricultores de la región donde se realizó el estudio.O objetivo do presente estudo de caso foi verificar a percepção e as práticas dos pequenos agricultores familiares quanto aos aspectos de conservação de nascentes em sua propriedade rural, bem como identificar as atividades de capacitação rural ofertados em seu espaço territorial. O trabalho foi realizado em 99 propriedades rurais de agricultores familiares do Núcleo Rural Ponte Alta, Região Administrativa do Gama, na Cidade de Brasília, Distrito Federal – Brasil. A presente pesquisa caracteriza-se metodologicamente como de natureza quantitativa, exploratória e descritiva. A coleta de dados foi realizada por meio da aplicação de questionário semiestruturado, contendo questões que remetiam à percepção e comportamento dos agricultores entrevistados sobre a temática em análise e caracterização do perfil social. Com base nos resultados, percebe-se que menos de 50% dos entrevistados realizam práticas de recuperação e conservação de nascentes. Dentre os agricultores que tentaram recuperar as suas nascentes, 27,27% apenas cercaram a nascente, outros 27,27% apenas reflorestaram e 27,27% recuperaram através de plantação. A ausência de conhecimento sobre a importância da recuperação de nascentes nas propriedades rurais é uma realidade. Assim, a educação ambiental se torna uma ferramenta importante para os produtores rurais se sensibilizarem com o agravante ambiental e ao mesmo tempo instruir-se sobre os métodos para preservação e conservação apropriados.
