Resumo: Objective: to present the social representations of aging in the world of work for elderly and adult nursing professionals. Method: research with a qualitative approach based on social representations. 36 nursing professionals aged between 27 and 67 years old, of both sexes, participated in a university hospital located in the State of Rio de Janeiro. The semi-directive interview was used to collect data and the Alceste 4.9 software was used to process the transcribed material for data analysis. Results: the program presented a specific category for the retirement of the nursing professional as a social representation of old age. This representation of old age interferes with the attitude or decision to retire or not. Conclusion: the nursing professional is little prepared to face the moment of retirement and that managers need to pay attention to this reality.

Método: investigación con enfoque cualitativo basado en representaciones sociales. 36 profesionales de enfermería de entre 27 y 67 años, de ambos sexos, participaron en hospital universitario ubicado en estado de Río de Janeiro. La entrevista semi-directiva se utilizó para recopilar datos y software Alceste 4.9 se utilizó para procesar material transcrito para análisis de datos. Resultados: el programa presentó una categoría específica para la jubilación del profesional de enfermería como representación social de la vejez. Esta representación de la vejez interfiere con actitud o decisión de retirarse o no. Conclusión: el profesional de enfermería está poco preparado para enfrentar el momento de la jubilación y que los gerentes deben prestar atención a esta realidad.Objetivo: apresentar as representações sociais do envelhecimento no mundo do trabalho para o profissional de enfermagem adulto e idoso. Método: pesquisa com abordagem qualitativa pautada nas representações sociais. Participaram 36 profissionais de enfermagem, com idade entre 27 e 67 anos, de ambos os sexos, de um hospital universitário localizado no Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Utilizou-se a entrevista semidiretiva para coleta de dados e o software Alceste 4.9 para processar o material transcrito para análise dos dados. Resultados: o programa apresentou uma categoria específica para a aposentadoria do profissional de enfermagem como representação social da velhice. Essa representação da velhice interfere na atitude ou decisão de se aposentar ou não.
