Resumo: Hymenaea courbaril and Hymenaea stigonocarpa are native medicinal plants of Brazil. Popularly known as jatobá-da-mata and jatobá-do-cerrado are widely used in folk medicine to treat various diseases, the different parts of the plants in the form of tea or syrup are used to treat respiratory problems, inflammation, stomach pain, and how healing. These species have potential therapeutic value due to the presence of various secondary metabolites such as flavonoids and terpenoids. Therefore, the objective this study was to evaluate the antioxidant and photoprotective activity of the hydroethanolic and methanolic extracts from plant parts (leaves, fruit rind, pulp and seed) of H. courbaril and H. stigonocarpa, as well as their content of total phenols and flavonoids. Moreover, it was also evaluated the cytotoxicity of the hydroethanolic extract from seeds of H. coubaril. The antioxidant activity of the extracts was performed by free radical scavenging using DPPH (2,2-difenil-1-picril hidrazil), antioxidant power reduction of iron (FRAP) and the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC-FL) assays. The content of total phenols and flavonoids was determined by spectrophotometric methods. The cytotoxicity of the hydroethanolic extract from seeds of H. coubaril on murine melanoma (B16F10-Nex2) cells was investigated by cell viability test using the Trypan blue dye exclusion method. The sun protection factor (SPF) was determined by in vitro method. The results showed that, except for pulp extracts, all extracts of both species showed antioxidant activity for DPPH and FRAP assays, and the hydroethanolic extract from seeds of H. coubaril presented the highest antioxidant activity with EC50 = 149.43μg/ mL for DPPH assay and 3073.51 ± 66.73 μM Trolox Equivalent (TE)/ g extract for the FRAP assay. The hydroethanolic extract from leaf of H. stigonocarpa showed the highest antioxidant potential (0.56 Trolox...
