Segurança do trabalho na construção civil: dados estatísticos de acidentes de trabalho e a prática da segurança do trabalho nos canteiros de obras

This undergraduate thesis aims to correlate statistical data on workplace accidents with information on workplace safety in building sites in Brazil. Initially, we laid the theoretical foundation on workplace safety with historical concepts and data related to occupational safety and the importance of these measures in building sites. In addition, a national analysis of labor accidents was carried out, based on the Annual Statistical Report of Workplace Accidents (issued by the Brazilian Ministry of Social Security). The analysis presents data on workplace accidents at a global, national, and state level while focusing on civil construction. Second, we conducted an exploratory field research through questionnaires applied with businessmen, leaders of civil construction companies, and civil engineers in the city of Tubarão (state of Santa Catarina), raising information about how workplace safety has been dealt with in building sites of the region. After analyzing the results and correlating the statistical data on workplace accidents with the results of the professionals in the civil construction, we found a direct link between the deficient practice of workplace safety in building sites and the unwelcome rates of occupational accidents in civil construction. This finding points to an evident need for a cultural change in the way employers and leaders in the area approach safety, for the sake of their workers.
