Resumo: The increased environmental impacts resulting from the burning of fossil fuels have pressed the international community to seek clean and renewable energy sources. The consolidation of alternatives such as wind and solar energy have hampered the obstacles of low efficiency and inability to store. In this context, it ascended the energy chain commanded by hydrogen, the most abundant element of the planet. With similar efficiency to petroleum-based fuels, minimal environmental impact and a wide range of applications, efforts were strengthened for the "Hydrogen Age", in which hydrogen would replace petroleum as the planet's main energy vector. Through a thorough bibliographical review, this work seeks to present this technology, with the aim of encouraging future academic efforts, considering that the content is not deepened in Brazilian literature. It will present the main concepts for the understanding of the hydrogen energy chain, as well as its current stage and perspectives for the coming years, proving that hydrogen energy is already a reality and that its popularization is only a matter of time.

A consolidação de alternativas como as energias eólica e solar esbarraram nos obstáculos de baixa eficiência e incapacidade de armazenamento. Nesse contexto, ascendeu a cadeia energética comandada pelas células a combustível e pelo hidrogênio, o elemento mais abundante do planeta. Com eficiência semelhante aos combustíveis derivados de petróleo, mínimo impacto ambiental e vasta gama de aplicações, foram fortalecidos os esforços pela “Era do Hidrogênio”, na qual o hidrogênio substituiria o petróleo como principal vetor energético do planeta. Por meio de uma minuciosa revisão bibliográfica, esse trabalho busca apresentar essa tecnologia, com o objetivo de incentivar novos esforços acadêmicos futuros, tendo em vista que o conteúdo é pouco aprofundado na literatura brasileira.
