Resumo: The increased in the prevalence of hypertension is associated with active and structural target organs that lead to increased complications and risks of death from cardiovascular problems. Knowing the prevalence of hypertension and the associated factors are relevant for prevention and treatment. To know the prevalence and the factors associated with Systemic Arterial Hypertension in a capital of Southern Brazil. Cross-sectional study of the adult evaluation of the population, both sexes, interviewed in 2013 (VIGITEL). The data was obtained from access to the micro data research, processed by DATASUS and analyzed by the SPSS 18.0 program, using the Chi-square test. The association measure was used for a prevalence ratio, with confidence interval (95% CI) and p<0.05. Approved by CEP-UNISUL. A prevalence of hypertension was 32.2%. Prevalence of male (62.1%), age greater than or equal to 60 years (39.3%) schooling over 12 years (39.2%), obesity (16.8%), dyslipidemia (26.2% ), diabetes (9.1%), high salt intake (14.7%), physical inactivity (17.6%), smoking (11.2%) and abusive alcohol consumption (12.7%). There was an association with statistical significance between hypertension and age 40, low levels of education, being obese or not, having dyslipidemia and diabetes, not physically active and making abusive use of alcohol. The majority of hypertensive patients are male adults, older than 40 years, with less than 8 years of schooling, obese or not, dyslipidemic and diabetic, not physically active and marking abusive alcohol use. Cardiovascular risk factors are high and calls attention to a need for a systematic approach of the prevention and control of hypertension.
