Resumo: The present study aims to explain the main reasons and motivations that led President Barack Obama to initiate the process of normalization and reconciliation with Cuba. In order to understand the Cold War period as well as the present-day scenario, it was important to be familiar with the historical process from where both countries came through. The revolutionary process was exposed and it had Fidel Castro as the main leader. This fact triggered Americans to start a series of aggressions to the Cuban government, destabilizing the island. Castro then guided his politics and economy to the Soviet Union because it seemed the most viable solution at the time. In the meantime, the end of the Cold war and the dissolution of the Soviet Union along with the process of globalization, made Cuba suffer again the impacts of these events. So Cuba re-oriented his economy to tourism, opening the doors for foreigners to visit the natural beauty of the island. The turning of the twenty-first century was marked by two leaders. George W. Bush, with his militaristic and war-promoting profile which tightened relations with Cuba, and subsequently his successor, Barack Obama, with a diplomatic and conciliatory profile that acted in several fronts in order to promote the reestablishment of the diplomatic and commercial relations with the island. He also visited the Cuban State in March of 2016. This behavior was very important for the Cubans and Americans. The last American President that visited the Island was in 1928. Barack Obama has drawn a path of openness and hope for his successor to continue his legacy and his commitment to the Cuban people.

Barack Obama has drawn a path of openness and hope for his successor to continue his legacy and his commitment to the Cuban people.O presente trabalho tem por objetivo explicar quais foram as principais razões e motivações pela qual levou o presidente Barack Obama a iniciar o processo de normalização e de reaproximação com Cuba.
