According to NR-33, sewer pumping stations are considered confined spaces because they are not designed for continuous human occupation, in other words, they do not present ventilation, lighting, ergonomic comfort, health and accessibility that allow the execution of services according to the environments designed for human occupation; because they have limited entry and exit ways, since the access conditions do not allow fast and safe escape in case of emergency; and due to insufficient ventilation to remove contaminants or oxygen deficiency. Therefore, the present work aimed at presenting the scenario of unsafe conditions found in maintenance activities of sewer pumping stations in a sanitation company residing in Florianópolis / SC. Hence, the goal was to check the application of the safety standards regarding the confined space (NR-33), in the maintenance of 5 sanitary sewer pumping stations; as well as characterizing the risks of exposed workers in the maintenance of sewer pumping stations through preliminary risk analysis. The 5 (five) interventions at pumping stations monitored in this research occurred between November 2018 and June 2019, in which the activities performed by the operators were cleaning, maintenance of pumps and equipment exchange. On the proposed work, It was verified that the evaluated company showed concern to comply with the safety guidelines foreseen by NR-33 and that there are risks inherent to the developed activity, which require proper supervision and risk management. The operators training to perform tasks in confined spaces is an indispensable preventive measure that is offered by the company, as well as previous medical examinations and periodic medical monitoring.
