Resumo: Obesity is one of the major public health problems in the world and contributes to the onset of many diseases, especially related to the metabolic syndrome (MS). The new Food Guide for the Brazilian Population (GAPB) launched by the Ministério da Saúde in 2014, prioritizes the consumption of fresh or minimally processed foods to ultraprocessed foods. The effects of educational interventions based on the new GAPB on anthropometric, clinical and biochemical aspects in obesity haven’t been yet investigated. Objective: To analyze the effects of an educational intervention, based on the new GAPB, on obese women. Methods: After approval by the Research Ethics Committee, 40 obese women were randomized into two groups: control group (CG) and intervention group (GI). The GI conducted an educational intervention with five biweekly meetings of 90-minutes based about GAPB. Both groups received virtual access to the guide. We evaluated parameters related to weight reduction, quality of life (SF-36), pain (McGill), bioimpedance (BIA), cardiorespiratory fitness, and components (serum and clinical) of MS, as well as serum concentrations of cytokines. Results: After the intervention, GI presented a reduction in body mass (p <0.05), waist circumference (p <0.001) and hip circumference (p <0.001). In the bioelectrical impedance analysis, basal metabolic rate, extracellular water, body capacitance and body cell mass were observed (p <0.05). In the analysis of the SF-36 questionnaire, in the emotional aspects, functional capacity, vitality and social, in the GI there was improvement (p <0.05) and in the mental aspect (p <0.01). Reduction of pain (p <0.05) and improvement in cardiorespiratory fitness were observed in GI. There were reductions in waist circumference and glycemia in the components of MS (p <0.05). Analyzes of the cytokines (TNF-alpha, IL-6 and IL-10) the concentrations of the samples were below the standard curve and it was not possible to detect serum cytokines in these individuals. Conclusions: The present study demonstrated that an approach with the new GAPB suggests that it is associated with weight loss, reduction of MS parameters, increase in quality of life and reduction of pain in obese women.
