Urban development in Brazilian cities has caused problems due to lack of planning and management during the process of land occupation. The infrastructure required for urban drainage usually does not match the needs and changes of the environment caused by the urbanization process. Understanding and diagnosing the way that the urbanization process has been consolidated shows important information to propose interventions that solve current and future problems related to urban drainage. Through a bibliographical research the concepts of hydrology related to urban drainage, the impacts of urbanization in front of the hydrological cycle and the relevance of urban planning with regard to rainwater management infrastructure through conventional and unconventional control measures. In the case study on the urban drainage of the district of Canavieiras, in Florianópolis, the aim was to understand the process of urbanization of the region, to carry out a survey of the drainage devices and their hydraulic behavior in front of the problems of floods reported by residents. The registration information was obtained from the city hall, service providers and on-site visit. This survey provided subsidies for the delimitation and analysis of the river basins and some existing drainage elements and devices, such as: canals, culverts, ditches and collecting boxes. At the end it was pointed out possible solutions of intervention in the drainage system based on the integration between conventional and unconventional measures for urban drainage.
