Proteção catódica: uso no concreto armado

Resumo: This research aims at studying the use of protection to steel which is used in Reinforced Concrete (RC) in hostile environments, such as coastal construction sites, to assess the effectiveness of the use of the CP (Cathodic Protection) system. Bearing in mind that since the moment humankind has started to utilize materials extracted from the environment, corrosion has been the most significant cause of deterioration to these materials. This is due to corrosive reactions, interpreted as the liberation of the energy which has been used to produce such materials, intending to return to their natural physical state as a spontaneous reaction. Moreover, after the industrial development, humankind has fully entered a ‘steel-age’ in which several steel varieties have been created to fulfill numerous different needs. However, its lack of resistance to corrosion and deterioration has become a major concern over the years. Among a vast number of techniques to avoid corrosion, the Cathodic Protection one has occupied a privileged spot due to its efficiency in making the material (steel) immune to the action of corrosion by eliminating the process of deterioration on the area of its application. Additionally, it is with the use of CP that millions of kilometers of underground piping operate safely on a daily basis.

Tendo em vista que desde o momento em que os seres humanos iniciaram a utilização dos metais extraídos da natureza, a corrosão tem sido a causa mais importante da deterioração destes materiais. Isso porque as reações de corrosão podem ser interpretadas como a liberação da energia utilizada para produzir estes materiais com o intuito de voltar naturalmente ao estado físico inicial, ou seja, tais reações são espontâneas. Com o desenvolvimento industrial, os seres humanos entraram plenamente na era do aço e milhares de diferentes tipos de aço foram desenvolvidos a fim de atender inúmeras finalidades. No entanto, sua resistência à corrosão, ao desgaste tem sido uma preocupação constante. Dentre os vários métodos de combate a corrosão, o lugar de destaque é ocupado pela PROTEÇÃO CATÓDICA que, dentro de seu campo de aplicação, elimina por completo tais processos, tornando o material metálico imune ao seu ataque.
