Resumo: | Breast milk is vital for the baby's development. In addition to feeding, it has the function of satisfying suction, due to the great effort of the muscles that are exercised during feeding. During the first six months of life, breastfeeding is the child's only food, protecting him against illness and strengthening his physical, mental and emotional health. Breast milk is extremely important for the development of the stomatognathic system, as the child receives various stimuli that provide his physical and psychological development. The stimuli are tactile-kinesthetic, thermal, olfactory, visual, auditory and motor and will enable the development of the basic functions of sucking, chewing, swallowing and breathing. Children who are breastfed with natural milk are less likely to have harmful oral habits. Even with many advantages of breastfeeding, it is observed that there is a kind of tendency to early weaning and mixed breastfeeding, historically present in society. The research was carried out using a qualitative approach based on a literature review and will aim to aims to address the importance of breastfeeding in preventing the emergence of harmful habits. The research was carried out from the SciELO and Google Scholar databases, where original and review articles on the topic related to this work were consulted. The keywords were used: breastfeeding, deleterious habits and early weaning, in Portuguese and English. The absence of breastfeeding, in addition to promoting the appearance of harmful habits, also causes a change in the growth and development of facial structures. One aspect that deserves special attention is the importance of the health professional in encouraging breastfeeding, promoting, supporting and instructing the nursing mother, through prenatal care and after birth, joint accommodation during childcare, among others. |
