Resumo: Especially after the 1950s, with the encouragement of the so-called Green Revolution, the use of agrochemicals became increasingly widespread. Nowadays, the annual worldwide consumption of these products reaches 2 million tons, which generates several environmental and public health problems. Among the individuals most affected by the intoxication risks associated with the use of agrochemicals are rural workers. They often have little schooling and aren’t properly oriented to the use of personal protective equipment. The objective of this work is to study the records associated with acute and chronic occupational intoxication caused by the use of agrochemicals, identifying the socio-demographic profile of the victims, using data from exogenous intoxications recorded at SINAN in the years 2009 to 2014 in the state of Santa Catarina. The variables toxic agent, sex, race, education, age group, type of pesticide, type of intoxication, city, type of exposure, route of exposure and evolution were analyzed. Among the results obtained, it was observed that the majority of intoxications are in males. Regarding race, the majority of notifications refer to whites. The education of most cases is incomplete elementary school. The age range of workers is between 20 and 49 years old, corresponding to the fraction of the economically active population. The main type of agrochemicals that generated the intoxications was the herbicide. The city of Santa Catarina with the highest number of cases was Rio do Campo, in the Itajaí Valley, which has tobacco as its main crop. An alternative to reduce agrochemicals intoxications is agroecology, whose food cultivation system allows for greater productivity without using agrochemicals.

An alternative to reduce agrochemicals intoxications is agroecology, whose food cultivation system allows for greater productivity without using agrochemicals.
