Resumo: | The aim of this study was to characterize the reported cases of Autism Spectrum Disorder and to estimate the prevalence in Southern Brazil. This is a descriptive exploratory epidemiological study using secondary data from support institutions for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder at different ages and in the states of southern Brazil, in 2016 and 2017. The disease prevalence was estimated according to the population of each responding municipality. A total of 1254 cases of this disorder were reported, with an estimated prevalence of 3.85 / 10,000 inhabitants, being 3.31 / 10,000 in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, 3.94 / 10,000 in Santa Catarina and 4.32 / 10,000 in Paraná. The sex ratio found was 2.2 male cases for each female case. The proportion of female cases was higher in SC than in RS and PR (p <0.007). Age information was obtained for 773 cases (62%), with a mean age of 13.94 (± 9.77) years. The highest number of cases reported was in the range of 5 to 9 years old . For those who reported the age of diagnosis, the mean was higher than would be expected, causing concerning about late diagnosis which may impair the development of children, especially in school introduction phase. |
