Dementia can be understood as a chronic syndrome of progressive character that involves cognitive decline and behavioral changes in the patient. Alzheimer's is considered the most common form of this syndrome, a neurodegenerative disease characterized by the gradual loss of the individual's memory, thinking and behavior. Both directly affect the social and daily life of the person with these diseases. Periodontal Disease is an inflammatory dental disease, caused by bacterial infection, which can be classified as gingivitis, the initial stage of the disease that may or may not progress to periodontitis, which is characterized by its more advanced stage. Thus, in the present work, a qualitative research was carried out based on a literature review.It can be concluded that both dementia, Alzheimer's Disease and Periodontal Disease are very prevalent diseases in the elderly and progress according to age. In addition, studies and research currently suggest the relationship between these diseases: Periodontal Disease can lead to the progression of Alzheimer's Disease according to the influence of two means, inflammatory and bacterial hypothesis; just as dementia and cognitive decline can interfere with the patient's oral hygiene through memory loss or lack of physical conditions, resulting in poor oral health. However, although several biologically plausible mechanisms have been proposed for the association between these diseases, more research is needed to verify how these diseases influence each other directly.
