Resumo: The human adenovirus 36 (Adv36) is target of studies which affirm its association with obesity by altering the body composition in the infected individuals. In some specific populations, such as in individuals living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), there is no evidence to confirm the relationship of Adv36 as a cause of Lipodystrophy and obesity yet. Objectives: To verify the association between the viral infection by Adv36 and the presence of lipohypertrophy in HIV-infected individuals. Methods: This is a cross-sectional case-control study which included people with HIV infection treated at a specialized public health service in the Southern Region of Santa Catarina. The participants were submitted to interview, laboratory tests and anthropometry to determine lipodystrophy and its classification, nutritional profile, in comparison to demographic and clinical variables. In a subsample, adipose tissue was collected to investigate the presence of Adv36. Results: A total of 420 participants were studied. The range age was 43.8 ± 11.7 years and 57.4% were men. The prevalence of lipodystrophy was 35.7%, with 40.7% presenting lipoatrophy, 54.7% with lipohypertrophy and 7% with mixed form. In the control phase, with a subsample of 100 participants, a frequency of 11% of Adv36 infection was identified. It was not a statistically significant association between the presence and presence of Advsan.com, when comparing a presence of ADV36, it obtained a chance ratio of 0.305 (IC-0.08-1.13 / p = 0.065). There was a tendency of association between lipohypertrophy and Adv36, and participants infected with Adv36 had lower blood glucose levels.
